Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in September and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's decision was the potential of his transfer to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is located around 13km from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, prompting him to impose a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded ongoing care for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, numerous his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.

The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the period, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
